Plantar fasciitis is a condition characterized by pain and inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of the foot connecting the heel bone to the toes. The plantar fascia supports the arch of the foot and absorbs shock when walking, running or jumping.
Individuals with plantar fasciitis may experience pain in the heel or arch of the foot, which may worsen with prolonged standing or walking. The condition can be caused by repeated trauma or stress to the plantar fascia, such as high-impact exercise, prolonged standing or walking on hard surfaces, or wearing unsupportive footwear.
Certain factors may increase the risk of developing plantar fasciitis include:
– Age: the condition is most common in individuals between the ages of 40 and 60.
– Sex: it is more common in females than males.
– Obesity: excess weight puts extra pressure on the plantar fascia, increasing the risk of inflammation.
– Foot structure: having flat feet, high arches, or an abnormal gait puts additional stress on the plantar fascia, making it more susceptible to injury.
Treatment options for plantar fasciitis may include:
1. Physical therapy: Modalities like Indiba, Softwave, Astym, and other physical therapy interventions can be used to improve tissue healing.
2. Footwear modifications: Wear shoes with good arch support and cushioning and avoid high heels or unsupportive shoes.
3. Rest and ice: Resting the affected foot and applying ice to the area can help to reduce swelling and pain.
4. Medications: Over-the-counter painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen may be used to manage pain and inflammation but have limited benefits.
With proper treatment, most people with plantar fasciitis recover within a few months, but it may take several months or longer in some cases, and recurrence is common.
